Closing Shop

Hubby and I are in the process of making some "life changes" and getting rid of things we don't need at the moment.

This has been a very difficult decision for me, but I've decided to let my pen turning go for the time being. As much as I enjoy it, I'm just not at the place in my life right now where it is feasible for me to be able to persue. I'm hoping to sell my lathe and all my supplies and use the money towards investing in another hobby that better fits my schedule and needs.

The Evils of Acrylic

Up until now, I've been working exclusively in wood. My primary materials have been the paduak and rosewood blanks that came in my starter kit. On occasion I got to use other woods, like walnut.

Mysterious Walnut

12Walnut1b

I struggled for awhile getting a good photograph of this pen. You have to hold it in the sun just right to really be able to see all the curl (those beautiful wavy, luminescent lines). Even now I'm not completely satisfied with the photograph - pictures just don't seem to do it justice!

Artistic expression

061b

After that ugly pencil, I took a lot of time mass producing pens. I glued all the little brass tubes into all the little pre-drilled blanks and squared all the little ends. This was a super boring process. Then, one after another, I turned about 5 pens worth of blanks, just to get the experience that I needed to feel comfortable with my tools. I finally stood at my lathe one day and decided to just wing it.
